Every October, creativity comes alive in the most unexpected ways. This year, I collaborated with two incredible women on a Halloween portrait series that celebrates both the eerie and the playful sides of the season. We scouted locations across Victoria—from Ross Bay Cemetery to the Gonzales Park Observatory—each spot adding its own unique atmosphere and character. The concept was simple: bring classic Halloween imagery to life through elegant, cinematic photography.
Some frames feature the women draped in ghost costumes, moving gracefully through fog and early light. Others transform them into modern spirits with carved pumpkin heads—a surreal blend of humour, beauty, and mystery.
The series was inspired by our shared love of visual storytelling and the idea that even within darkness, there’s art, emotion, and light. At Derek Ford Studios, projects like this remind me why I love photography—it’s a collaboration, an experiment, and a way to see the world differently.
Process & Approach
We approached this series like a short film: scout, plan, test, execute. Natural conditions were key—early evening light, open shade—paired with portable strobes to sculpt shape and mood where needed. Retouching preserved realism while enhancing tone and depth for a timeless, editorial feel.
- Locations: Ross Bay Cemetery, Gonzales Park Observatory
- Lighting: Early evening natural light + strobe for contour and separation
- Look & Feel: Cinematic, moody, playful
